URL encoder / decoder

Encode or decode a URL component safely.

MAKE EVERY STEP COUNT

Prepare a value for a URL without guessing at escapes

Prepare a value for use in a URL query parameter, or decode percent-encoded text into a readable form.

Build a query parameter

Encode the value you want to place inside a URL parameter so spaces and reserved characters do not accidentally change the URL's structure. Keep the surrounding parameter names, equals signs, and separators outside the encoded value.

Inspect an encoded value

Decode percent-escaped text copied from a development workflow to make it readable. The result is displayed as plain text, so decoding a value does not navigate to a website or execute content.

Get the best result

This uses encodeURIComponent, which also encodes slashes and colons. Encode individual parameter values, rather than an entire URL you want to navigate to.

SEE WHAT TO EXPECT

A practical example

Starting point
coffee & tea
Expected result
coffee%20%26%20tea

Spaces become %20 and the ampersand becomes %26. These escapes help keep the value distinct from query-string separators.

Troubleshooting and useful checks

Decoding reports an invalid sequence

Check for incomplete percent escapes or invalid UTF-8 byte sequences. A stray percent sign is not automatically a valid encoded character.

My complete URL no longer looks navigable

This tool uses component encoding, which encodes slashes and colons as well. Encode individual parameter values instead of a complete URL that you want to remain directly navigable.

HELPFUL ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

A little clarity before you get started.

Is a plus sign decoded as a space?

No. This tool decodes percent escapes. Form-encoded plus signs are a different convention.

Is this the same as encoding an entire URL?

No. The tool uses encodeURIComponent for a value within a URL. It encodes reserved characters that would otherwise separate parts of a complete address.

Why does a plus sign remain a plus when decoding?

The decoder handles percent escapes. In form-encoded data, plus can represent a space, but that is a separate convention. This page does not apply that form-specific substitution.

Can I encode non-English characters?

Yes. Component encoding represents Unicode text with UTF-8 percent escapes. Decoding requires valid percent-encoded sequences that form valid text.

What happens if I encode text twice?

Percent signs in the first encoded result are encoded again. For example, %20 becomes %2520. Decode the corresponding number of times only when your workflow actually uses nested encoding.

Do I need an account to use this tool?

No. This tool is free to use without signing in. An account lets you keep a list of favorite tools.

Can I use this on a phone?

Yes, with a current browser. File support, download behavior, and available memory vary by device. For large documents and images, a computer is often more comfortable.
