MAKE EVERY STEP COUNT

Understand the length and reading effort of your draft

Check the length of articles, captions, descriptions, and drafts as you type. Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute.

Edit to a length target

Paste a draft and watch its totals as you revise. Word counts help with article briefs and assignments, while character counts are useful for descriptions or form fields. Check the destination's own counting rules before relying on an exact limit.

Plan a reader-friendly piece

Use paragraph counts and estimated reading time as a quick overview of a longer text. These measurements can reveal that a draft is longer than intended, but they do not evaluate clarity, accuracy, grammar, or structure.

Get the best result

Words are counted as groups separated by whitespace. Character counts include spaces and line breaks; emoji may contain multiple Unicode code points.

SEE WHAT TO EXPECT

A practical example

Starting point
Hello world!
Expected result
2 words, 12 characters, 1 paragraph, and an estimated 1 minute to read.

Characters include spaces and punctuation. Reading time is rounded up using 200 words per minute, so even a short nonempty text shows one estimated minute.

Troubleshooting and useful checks

Another editor reports a different word count

This tool counts whitespace-separated groups. Other editors may treat hyphens, punctuation, numbers, or languages without spaces differently. Use the destination's count when a strict submission limit applies.

Paragraph totals seem low

Paragraphs are separated by blank lines, not every single line break. Add a blank line between paragraphs if that matches the structure you intend to measure.

HELPFUL ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

A little clarity before you get started.

Is the reading time exact?

No. It is an estimate; technical writing and individual reading speed can change it.

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes. The character total includes spaces, punctuation, and line breaks. It counts Unicode code points; one displayed emoji can contain several code points.

How is reading time estimated?

The word count is divided by 200 and rounded up to whole minutes. Empty input shows zero. Individual readers and technical or unfamiliar material can take more time.

Can I download the text after editing?

Yes. Use Download text to save the current editor contents as a UTF-8 text file. The download contains your text, rather than the displayed statistics.

Will this check grammar or plagiarism?

No. The tool measures length and estimates reading time. It does not verify originality, spelling, grammar, or the accuracy of the text.

Do I need an account to use this tool?

No. This tool is free to use without signing in. An account lets you keep a list of favorite tools.

Can I use this on a phone?

Yes, with a current browser. File support, download behavior, and available memory vary by device. For large documents and images, a computer is often more comfortable.
